Vector
Malawi Rivers
Abstract
Malawi's river system is dominated by the Shire River, the country’s largest waterway, which flows from Lake Malawi southward to join the Zambezi River. Other major river systems feeding into Lake Malawi or draining its surrounding highlands include the Songwe River (forming part of the northern border with Tanzania), the South Rukuru, the Dwangwa, the Bua, and the Linthipe River. These northern and central rivers are highly seasonal and critical for local agriculture, while the Shire River provides vital hydroelectric power and irrigation downstream. Together, this intricate network of rivers shapes Malawi's fertile landscape, supports its diverse aquatic biodiversity, and sustains the livelihoods of its rural populations.
