Vector
Malawi Lakes
Description
Inland water bodies and lacustrine features across Malawi.
Abstract
This dataset delineates the major lakes and significant water bodies of Malawi. Lake Malawi, the country's dominant feature, is the third-largest lake in Africa and the second-deepest, occupying approximately 28,800–29,600 km² and shared with Mozambique and Tanzania. Other notable water bodies include Lake Malombe, Lake Chilwa (a shallow, endorheic lake and Ramsar wetland), and Lake Chiuta, a transboundary lake shared with Mozambique. These lakes are critical to Malawi's freshwater resources, fisheries, and biodiversity. Lake Malawi National Park, designated in 1980, protects its unique tropical fish diversity. This dataset supports hydrological analysis, water resource management, and conservation planning.
