Abstract

This research reviews safety inspections routines of petroleum storage facilities at different petroleum depot in Blantyre. The main plan was to analyze the risk with help of Malawi energy regulatory authority (MERA) guidelines in 2004 and international standard rules associated in different sections which are being carried out in Petroleum depot, during building, handling, storage and distribution/or transportation, and to minimize the hazard in order to make the working environment.

As the Depot handles various petroleum products which have got many possible hazards, hence it is necessary to evaluate the Risk from the facilities at the Depot. It is observed that Despite the introduction of the MERA guidelines in 2004, not all petroleum industries in Malawi run through it some follow international standards while only local companies follow the local standards which are MERA standards in their operation at the deport.

The types of human casualties collected and recorded between the years (2019-2022) shows that slightly injured are most type of accidents the often occur at the depot and oil storage area, loading and unloading operation area and auxiliary operation area are areas which are most prone to occur accidents. It is also the need for effective inspection by Malawi energy regulatory authority to make sure if the oil marketing company are following the standard guidelines on their everyday routines.
